Senior Data Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join our small (but mighty) Data Development team. As a team, we are responsible for the technical development and management of our data and analytics platforms, applications, data models, and data assets. Together with our colleagues in Data Science and Business Intelligence, we make up Data Solutions, whose collective mission is to enable smarter decisions, faster.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a talented Data Engineer looking to take on significant responsibility, from leading projects to helping shape the future of our data platform. This is more than just building data pipelines – ultimately our goal is to maximise the potential of our Data Science and Business Intelligence teams, so we need to be one step ahead, innovate, and provide them with tools before they know they need them.

About our platform and tools 🛠️:

  • 100% PaaS architecture in Azure
  • Azure Databricks platform, with data stored in Azure Data Lake Storage
  • Scala-Spark data pipelines
  • Custom CICD tool using Akka
  • Several open-source Spark libraries released to the Spark community
  • Constantly reviewing our tools and architecture as technology evolves

What you’ll do 🐱‍💻:

  • Lead project delivery, including solution design, development, testing and maintenance
  • Identify improvement opportunities in our platform/tools and see them through to completion
  • Contribute and manage contributions to our open-source projects
  • Mentor and train junior members of the team
  • Be the technology SME and consult with the Data Science and Business Intelligence teams on how to maximise the performance of their applications
  • Explore and prototype the latest technical innovation within Big Data, constantly shaping Data Solutions' platform to keep pace with the industry

About you 🐸:

We are looking for someone with:

  • Technical experience working in Big Data
  • Experience developing and delivering data projects using Apache Spark in Scala
  • Experience designing solutions for data ingestion projects into Hadoop
  • Strong Apache Spark skills, as well as experience with Hive and other Big Data tooling
  • Strong Scala skills, with functional programming experience being an advantage
  • Strong focus on writing maintainable software (TDD, abstraction of common behaviour, code reviews)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills when working with both business and technical teams

It would also be good if you had:

  • Experience mentoring junior employees
  • Experience using Akka
  • Experience building and maintaining infrastructure in Azure

At Cox Automotive, we love to celebrate individual achievements as well as career success.

Georgia, Auction Assistant at Manheim Plymouth, recently did something out of this world to honor her dads legacy!

“Before my Dad passed away,” explains Georgia, “we talked about the possibility of doing a charity sky-dive. After he died, I knew that I had to focus my thoughts and attention on trying to do something positive to help other people. “I wanted to make him proud and because the staff at the hospital were so amazing – I pushed myself to raise as much money for them as possible. My team, and our wider Cox Automotive family, have been incredible in their support. I’ve been overwhelmed with the donations that everyone has made!”

Georgia raised an amazing £3,206.14 for the Brent, Bracken and Birch ward in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. The hospital is putting the money towards extending a specialist suite, which provides accommodation for patients who must be in isolation and will be replacing broken TVs with brand new ones for patients to enjoy.
